6 key learning on constraint management from project management perspective.

6 key learning on constraint management from project management perspective.

1. Add Cushion for variations.Padding happens because of Statistical Fluctuation Dependencies.
Variation happens, therefore add pad to protect in case of failure to comply on time.

2. if there is a saving in projects (task completed early),Saving doesn't accumulate because we don't pass on the work done before hand but delays do accumulate.

3. Typically padding are for worst case scenarios. Not for probabilistic scenarios as we normally presume.

4. Student syndrome. Last minute rush to attend, wastage is highest at the start of the project. But efficiency is always highest at the end. (Since we know its not going to take so much time, we tend to go slow therefore accumulate the work at the end).

5. In Daily life we pad the activities which feed the critical activity causing a constraint. However, in project management we tend to pad on critical activity. therefore constraint become a bigger constraint.

6. Devil is in the detail. Detail Vs more analysis leads to paralysis. Project manager should details WBS to as micro level as feasible.

Last but not the least, Inventory every where is dangerous but no inventory before constraint is disastrous.
